INTERSECTION OF JAZZ AND CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL AT WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
Lecture Recital:  “Explorations: Jazz Composers and a New Concert Music”
It is wryly remarked that the birth of boogie-woogie occurred not in the end of the 1920’s but rather a century earlier on the pages of Beethoven’s Op. 111.  The same is often said about the similarities between the accented syncopations of ragtime and the early Beethoven Sonatas, such as Op. 10, No. 3.  Perhaps our 20th and 21st Century ears engage in an act of auditorial retrofitting to arrive at such conclusions.  However, what Beethoven could only have possibly adumbrated, composers of concert music in the 20th-21st Century now do so with clarity and intention.  There are well known examples of composers of concert music who incorporate “jazz” influence in their works.  However, there is also a growing number of jazz musicians composing concert music today.  I believe that this compositional output is of incredible interest and has potential to enliven the entire concert experience, for audience and performer alike.  It is a hope that these works of unique and non-conventional origins find a place in the standard concert repertoire, as well to encourage jazz musicians and other non-traditional concert music composers to put pen to paper and enrich the world of concert music in the 21st Century.
